Australia committed to assisting Fiji

Australia is providing urgent humanitarian assistance to the people of Fiji following recent devastating floods across the island nation.

Federal Member for Chifley Ed Husic has welcomed the announcement of $1 million in aid to effected parts of Fiji.

“As I understand, Australia will send 350,000 water purification tablets, 2,000 water containers and more than 3,000 tarpaulins to Fiji,” Mr Husic said.

“Australia will also provide financial assistance to the Fiji Red Cross and UNICEF to assess the damage and replenish essential water and sanitation supplies, medicine, clothing and shelter.”

The floods have caused several deaths and damaged homes and other infrastructure and many thousands of people are taking refuge in evacuation centres.

The floods claimed the lives of five people and damaged homes, roads, hospitals, schools and crops.

“Fijians should know at this difficult time, they are not alone.

“Australia’s assistance to Fiji should bring a degree of comfort to Fijians living in Australia, particularly those whose loved ones have been affected.”
