BISHOP ANTHONY A GREAT APPOINTMENT AS
THE NEXT ARCHBISHOP OF SYDNEY
Chifley MP Ed Husic has welcomed the announcement that the Bishop of Parramatta, Anthony Fisher, has been appointed as the new Archbishop of Sydney.
He replaces Cardinal George Pell, who now resides at The Vatican. Bishop Anthony becomes the ninth Archbishop of Sydney.
“Having had the pleasure of dealing with Bishop Anthony on numerous occasions, I’ve always been highly impressed by his care for the welfare of people in our area,” Mr Husic said today.
“He is someone I have deep regard for and I’m extremely pleased to see him elevated to such a special position within the Catholic Church.
“He has been a strong advocate for education in Western Sydney, championing the need to lift the quality and funding of education in our region.
“Catholicism is held dear to the hearts of thousands of constituents in the electorate of Chifley - particularly amongst the Australian-Filipino community - and I know Bishop Anthony will represent them well.”
Ordained as a priest in 1991, Sydneysider Bishop Anthony was raised in the suburbs. He’s served ably as the Bishop of Parramatta since 2010, appointed by Pope Benedict XVI. He also co-ordinated the highly successful and memorable World Youth Day in 2008 in Sydney.
“I look forward to maintaining close contact with Bishop Anthony and know I am joined by many in welcoming his appointment,” Mr Husic concluded.
