Chifley pensioners receive increase in pensions

More than 24,000 local pensioners will receive a boost to their payments from today to help them keep up with the cost of living.

Single people receiving the maximum rate of Age Pension, Carer Payment and adult Disability Support Pension, as well as veteran income support recipients, will receive an extra $17.10 a fortnight.

Pensioner couples on the maximum rate will receive an increase of $25.80 a fortnight combined.

Chifley Federal MP Ed Husic said today marks three years since the Australian Government delivered major reforms to the pension system to strengthen the financial security of seniors, carers and people with disability.

“Since the reforms took effect in September 2009, pensions have increased by $172 a fortnight for single pensioners and $182 a fortnight for pensioner couples on the maximum rate.” Mr Husic said.

“The Gillard Government recognises that pensioners, more than most in the community, feel any shift in cost of living and these increases help provide a buffer.”

Total pension payments for pensioners on the maximum rate, including the base rate and pension supplement, are now:

  • $772.60 a fortnight for single pensioners, and

  • $1,164.80 a fortnight for couples combined.

Mr Husic said, “I hope the NSW Liberal Government also appreciates the financial pressures faced by pensioners and not see them as another avenue to make more budget savings.”
