The depth of incredible sporting talent in the Chifley electorate has been highlighted in Commonwealth sporting grants awarded to young local athletes.
MP for Chifley Ed Husic has congratulated some of our up-and-coming athletes in an afternoon tea and certificate ceremony he has hosted at Mt Druitt.
“The list of sports our local athletes excel in never ceases to impress me,” Mr Husic said today.
“Many of our young athletes have to travel long distances to train and compete, and the sacrifices they make at such a young age is admirable,” he said.
Representative volleyballer Taissa Pereira from Willmot, emerging tennis star Eric Tripathi from Blacktown and talented gymnast Sarah Hemmings from Hassall Grove have each been recognised for their dedication through the Australian Sports Commission’s Local Sporting Champions Grants program.
After three years of competition, 18 year old Taissa has gained debut selection in the NSW Volleyball Squad competing in the National Titles in Canberra.
12 year old Eric battled his way through four rounds of selection to be chosen in the NSW team for the Bruce Cup tennis competition staged in Darwin – He is presently ranked number 3 in NSW in his age group.
Sarah, who turns 16 later this month, is part of the NSW gymnastics team and balances her school studies with training four times a week, four to five hours each session.
“The commitment and enthusiasm these young athletes have for their chosen sports is really inspiring and I could sense their enthusiasm in the chats we had,” Mr Husic said.
“Their parents have every right to be extremely proud of their achievements to date, because training for many hours each week, while maintaining good marks at school takes a lot of discipline.
“I congratulate the Sports Commission on its Local Sporting Champions Grants program. The funding it provides helps these young athletes and their selfless parents immensely.
“I will watch Eric, Sarah and Taissa’s progress with interest and hope they all make it to the top of their chosen sports”, Mr Husic concluded.
