Ed Husic opens refurbished Science Centre at Chifley College Bidwill Campus

Federal Member for Chifley, Ed Husic yesterday officially opened the refurbished Science Centre at Chifley College Bidwill Campus, built as part of the Australian Government’s Building the Education Revolution (BER).

Chifley College Bidwill Campus received $1,367,724 under the National School Pride (NSP) program and Science and Language Centres for 21st Century Secondary Schools (SLC) element of the BER.

The BER is a key element of the Australian Government’s $42 billion Nation Building – Economic Stimulus Plan to support jobs, stimulate local economies and invest in important infrastructure for the long term.

Mr Husic congratulated Chifley College Bidwill Campus on their new facilities and heard from teachers and students the difference these new facilities had made to their classes.

“I hope that these modern facilities encourage more young people to study science as this is important for our nation’s productivity and innovation,” Mr Husic said.

“I’m grateful for the investment by the Australian Government in Secondary Schools in Chifley and know that there are many parents, teachers and students who too are grateful.”

The $821.8 million SLC element is providing funding to over 500 selected secondary schools across Australia to build new or refurbished science laboratories and language learning centres.

Mr Husic said the record investment in school infrastructure helped Australia avoid the full effect of the global financial crisis.

“I am delighted that this particular project has supported the employment of many local workers. This is what we strived to achieve – this is the essence of the Economic Stimulus Plan,” Mr Husic said.
