Federal MP for Chifley Ed Husic to visit Indonesia

Federal Member for Chifley Ed Husic will leave for Jakarta today to take part in the inaugural Indonesia-Australia Dialogue.

The Dialogue aims to form regular people-to-people links between the two nations across a range of issues.
Representatives of government, business and academia will meet in Jakarta between 5 and 6 October.

Mr Husic said he was eagerly looking forward to taking part in the Dialogue.

“This will be an important trip for me – because the first trip I take as an MP will be to one of our nation’s most important partners, Indonesia,” Mr Husic said.

“Taking part in this Dialogue is something I’ve been looking forward to because I think having a strong working relationship with Indonesia is critical for us nationally and regionally.

“Over the two days, we’ll cover a variety of domestic, regional and global issues and will also look to see what opportunities exist to work closer together on business, science and technology.”

On Friday, Mr Husic will speak to post-graduate international relations students at Paramadina University as well as meeting with DBL Indonesia, the group tasked with helping develop basketball within Indonesia.

The Indonesia-Australia Dialogue will be co-convened by Mr John McCarthy, former Ambassador to Indonesia, United States, Japan, Thailand, Vietnam and Mexico and High Commissioner to India, and Dr Rizal Sukma, Executive Director of the Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in Jakarta.

Other participants in the Dialogue include Senator for the Northern Territory Trish Crossin, Federal Member for Hasluck Ken Wyatt, CSIRO Executive Director Dr James Bradfield, Rio Tinto India Managing Director Dr Nik Senapati, Chief Operating Officer Baker and McKenzie Geraldine Chin Moody, NSW Young Australian of the Year 2011 Samah Hadid, ABC Managing Director Mark Scott, senior media correspondents Lenore Taylor and Greg Sheridan.

The Indonesia-Australia Dialogue initiative was announced by leaders during the March 2010 visit to Australia by Indonesian President Yudhoyono.
