Financial services for vulnerable Australians in Mt Druitt

The Minister for Community Services, Julie Collins, and the Member for Chifley, Ed Husic, have visited Anglicare in Mt Druitt to see first-hand how the Australian Government’s Financial Management Program is improving the lives of vulnerable families in Western Sydney .

The Australian Government has provided Anglicare NSW, including Mt Druitt, with over $2 million this financial year to deliver two important initiatives through the Financial Management Program – Emergency Relief and Commonwealth Financial Counselling.

“The Australian Government wants every Australian to have the opportunity to learn and practice good money management to live successful, independent lives,” Ms Collins said.

“The Financial Management Program is providing nearly $500 million over four years to organisations such as Anglicare to teach people in financial distress how to manage their money better.

“Emergency Relief services help with people’s immediate needs in times of crisis.

“More than 9,600 people were provided with close to $2.5 million of support through Emergency Relief delivered by Anglicare in the Sydney area in 2011-2012.”

Mr Husic said Emergency Relief provides disadvantaged with essentials such as food and clothing, pharmacy and transport vouchers and help with crisis accommodation and utility bills.

“Emergency Relief services are also a gateway to other services and support for people dealing with other complex issues,” Mr Husic said.

“These extra services can include money management programs, drug and alcohol support, mental health support and family support.

“Even in a country like Australia that is doing well economically compared to other parts of the world, thousands in our community find themselves in financial distress.

“The Australian Government is committed to helping disadvantaged Australians overcome social exclusion,” Mr Husic said
