Government and AFL support indigenous kids in Western Sydney

The Gillard Labor Government is teaming up with the AFL, Team GWS and the Sydney Swans to encourage young Indigenous Australians in Western Sydney and regional NSW to stay at school and strive for a bright future.

The Minister for Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs, Jenny Macklin, joined Labor Candidate for Chifley, Ed Husic, and Labor Candidate for Greenway, Michelle Rowland, to launch the Learn. Earn. Legend! Indigenous Family-School Parent and Community Engagement (PaCE) project with the AFL.

“The Gillard Labor Government’s goal is to encourage young Indigenous Australians to stay at school and in training so they can get great jobs and careers,” Jenny Macklin said.

“The project will bring together players from the Sydney Swans, Team GWS and Indigenous parents to encourage kids to stay at school and work hard to get good results.

“The project will provide mentoring to promote the value and importance of education and a series of workshops for Indigenous students and their parents.”

Ed Husic said the PaCE project would build strong partnerships between the AFL and local Indigenous students and parents to ensure they are engaged in school as a pathway to employment.

“This is a great way for the Government to partner with the AFL heroes of young Indigenous children to send an important message,” Ed Husic said.

“Attending school makes it possible for young Indigenous people in Western Sydney to earn a good living and support themselves and their community.”

Jenny Macklin also announced the AFL SportsReady program had placed its 1000th AFL SportsReady Indigenous Trainee, Owen Love, with the AFL NSW/ACT Indigenous Academy. Mr Love is undertaking a Certificate III in Sport and Recreation.

Michelle Rowland said this was a great achievement for Owen and his family.

“A good education is a solid foundation for the future, and the best start for all young people to follow their dreams,” Michelle Rowland said.

“With the Learn. Earn. Legend! initiative we are building the hopes and aspirations of Indigenous students. We know that the better the education you receive the better your chances of getting a good job.”

The PaCE and SportsReady programs are funded under the Gillard Labor Government’s Learn. Earn. Legend! initiative, providing real change and a pathway for young Indigenous Australians to support themselves and their communities through education and employment.

Funding for the PaCE program has been allocated from the Indigenous Education Targeted Assistance Program that was announced in the 2009-10 Budget.
