GP care a phone call away for families

After hours GP advice will only be a phone call away for families in Chifley with the launch of the after hours GP helpline from tomorrow.

Minister for Health and Ageing, Nicola Roxon with Federal Member for Chifley, Ed Husic today visited the McKinder Family – Stuart, Jenni, Stirling, Flynn, Rowen and Angus – in Marayong to talk about the new after hours GP helpline and how it will provide late night reassurance and advice to families across Western Sydney.

Minister Roxon said the Gillard Government is making it easier for local families to contact a doctor when they need to through initiatives like the after hours GP helpline.

“The after hours GP helpline will be open when your GP may not be – at nights, on weekends and on public holidays – 365 days a year,” Minister Roxon said.

Ed Husic said this initiative is just one example of how Labor is delivering services that matter to families, right across Western Sydney.

“We understand the worry of looking after a sick kid and nothing compares to being able to pick up the phone and talk to a doctor at the other end,” Mr Husic said.

“In the middle of the night families like the McKinder family, will be able to pick up the phone and talk to a nurse or GP to get advice and if needed, be referred to their nearest open after-hours service,” Mr Husic said.

Stuart and Jenni said the after hours GP helpline will be a great help to their family, knowing that there is always a GP or nurse available and only a call away.

“It is nice to know that you can contact someone late at night, when your local GP is not open. It gives you reassurance that assistance is available,” Jenni said.

“One of Australia’s most trusted health brands, Medibank Health Solutions, will operate the after hours GP helpline with a team of about 100 GPs and over 240 nurses on staff to answer calls,” Minister Roxon said.

The after hours GP helpline will be added to existing telephone-based nurse triage, information and advice services currently available across the country.

The service will be free to callers from landlines within Australia and will operate between 6pm and 8am Monday to Friday, 6pm Friday to 8am Saturday, 12pm Saturday to 8am Monday, and on all national and state/territory public holidays.

The after hours GP helpline can be accessed on 1800 022 222
