Locals recognised in the Chifley Volunteers Awards

The dedication and generosity of local volunteers has been recognised today at the Chifley Volunteers Awards.

Minister for Social Inclusion, Tanya Plibersek joined Federal Member for Chifley, Ed Husic in paying tribute to the contribution volunteers make to our community.

This year’s awards mark the 10th Anniversary of the International Year of Volunteers and saw the largest field of nominees since the awards’ inception.

Joan Freeman of Rooty Hill was named 2011 Chifley Volunteer of the Year for her enduring service to our community.

Joan has devoted many years to teaching scripture at Whalan Public School and serving the communities at Uniting Church at Rooty Hill, Mt Druitt Hospital and St Alban’s Anglican Multicultural Bible Ministry.

Joan was not well enough to be there to hear her name announced but her award was accepted by Allison Cowell, who acted as a referee for Joan’s nomination.

Special recognition was given to two of the youngest volunteers to be recognised: Jamison Sassine and Muriel Pittman, who were warmly congratulated for being terrific local volunteering role models.

“All the volunteers not only give their time to the communities in Chifley – their commitment and dedication enriches the lives of others around them,” Mr Husic said.

“Without the generosity of the volunteers we’re honouring today, our communities will be all the poorer.”

“I not only thank the individuals and groups we recognise today, but to those from within the community who took the time to nominate them.”
