Chifley MP Ed Husic has expressed his disbelief at the Abbott Government’s decision to end the Saturday operations of Blacktown’s Medicare office.
“This decision makes no sense and is simple penny pinching by the Abbott Government,” Mr Husic said today.
“From cutting the MRI from Mount Druitt Hospital to looking at charging $6 for visits to GPs to shutting down Medicare offices on Saturday – the Abbott Government is making it harder and harder to get access to healthcare in our area.”
The Abbott Government’s Department of Human Services has announced that March 22 will be the last day the Medicare Office in the Westpoint Shopping Centre will operate on a Saturday.
It usually operated on a Saturday from 9am until 12.30pm.
“Many people from my electorate of Chifley rely on the Medicare Office at Blacktown and its convenience,” Mr Husic added. “This is especially the case for working families who use the time on a Saturday to visit Medicare.”
The Department of Human Services claims the decision is justified because 90 per cent of Medicare transactions are now handled without staff assistance.
“This is just another example of the Abbott Government attacking services to save a few dollars and they must reverse this decision,” Mr Husic said.
