Mt Druitt Hospital wins $6million for MRI license

Member for Chifley, Ed Husic has welcomed the announcement by Prime Minister Kevin Rudd that Mount Druitt Hospital would receive $6 million for a MRI licence.

The Federal funding is part of a significant new $357 million investment in hospitals and health services around the country announced by the Rudd Labor Government.

“This Rudd Labor Government decision is incredibly good news, strongly improving the quality of healthcare in the Mount Druitt area,” Mr Husic said.

“The $6 million for a full Medicare licence for the MRI machine at Mt Druitt Hospital will give patients access to faster diagnosis of medical conditions.

“This is a massive win for Mount Druitt. It means locals won’t have to travel to Blacktown or Nepean Hospitals for diagnosis – in the near future they can be assured of getting a MRI scan at Mount Druitt Hospital.

“I want to warmly thank the over 4,000 residents who signed my petition to secure a MRI here. People power – combined with the support of the Mount Druitt Hospital – has delivered this MRI licence.

“Working together we have delivered this MRI and better healthcare for local residents.

“Federal Labor’s record on health investment is strong. Under Federal Labor we have seen more money, more beds and less waiting.

“In contrast, Tony Abbott and the Coalition would savagely cut health investment putting Australians’ access to quality and affordable healthcare at risk.

“I call on Tony Abbott and his local Federal Liberal candidate for Chifley to guarantee that funding for our MRI licence is quarantined from the Coalition’s $70 billion in budget cuts,” Mr Husic.

A summary of Federal Labor’s new health investments for western Sydney is attached.

Funding for these commitments is already provided for in the budget.

  • $100 million for the first stage of a comprehensive redevelopment of Westmead Hospital, the major hospital servicing Sydney’s western suburbs.
  • $12 million for construction of a medical research and education facility for the Westmead Millennium Institute which focusses on conditions including cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, major infectious and immune diseases and liver, eye, kidney and psychiatric diseases.
  • $10 million for the Children’s Medical Research Institute (CMRI) Westmead redevelopment project, one of Australia’s leading medical research institutions. This will allow CMRI to expand its work, including a project to identify molecular components of an enzyme that 85 per cent of cancers depend on for their growth.
  • $6 million for a full Medicare license for the MRI machine at Mt Druitt Hospital giving patients in Sydney’s west faster diagnosis of medical conditions.
  • $10 million for a new linear accelerator and mammogram machine at Nepean Hospital.
  • $22 million announced last week to build another stage of the vitally needed St George Hospital redevelopment which will provide an additional floor on top of the emergency department and a rebuilt vascular surgery unit.
