New performing arts centre will benefit thousands of western Sydney students

More than 3000 students from seven schools in western Sydney will benefit from using facilities at the new Greater Western Sydney Performing Arts Centre, officially opened today by Minister for School Education Peter Garrett and Member for Chifley Ed Husic

The $2.2 million centre was built at Plumpton High School as part of the Gillard Government’s $62.5 million Local Schools Working Together pilot program, which encourages schools in the same community to share facilities and resources among students.

The centre will be shared by students from Plumpton Public School, Plumpton House School, William Dean Public School, Glendenning Public School, Good Shepherd Primary School and the Australian Islamic College of Sydney.

“This new centre will offer much-needed space for large school events, theatre performances and music practices for thousands of local primary and secondary school students,” Mr Garrett said.

“It will also include advanced projection, light and sound facilities, including video links to external venues, as well as rehearsal rooms for music tuition and practice.

“I’m a strong supporter of arts education and believe that all our students should have access to the creative and performing arts, regardless of what school they attend. It’s really fantastic to see such a great facility being made available for students in western Sydney and I’m sure the students will make the most of this terrific opportunity.”

Under Local Schools Working Together, the Government is funding schools in 26 areas around Australia share their facilities. This creates new opportunities for students who might otherwise not have access to the range of resources available at other schools.

Member for Chifley, Ed Husic is delighted that such a great facility will be enjoyed by so many.

“I can find no better example of schools working together – government and non-government alike – to provide staff and student with the very best of facilities.”

"Importantly this Centre meets a major need - I visit so many schools that are bursting at the seams with creative and performing arts talent but don't have a venue to display this.

"With this Centre we can showcase the skills and energy of young people in this area."
