NSW Budget confirms secret Liberal plan to toll the M4

Barry O’Farrell’s State Budget confirms a secret plan by the Liberals to reintroduce tolls on the M4 Motorway.

Federal Labor MPs Michelle Rowland and Ed Husic today said Barry O’Farrell and the Liberals will slug Western Sydney families with excessive tolls to use a road link that is currently free.

“This is a disappointing result for Western Sydney motorists,” said Ms Rowland.

“Barry O’Farrell has confirmed Western Sydney families will have to pay tolls to use the existing M4 road corridor.

“If Tony Abbott is elected he will also support the re-introduction of tolls on the M4, proven by his ‘no strings’ offer should he become Prime Minister.

“And even with all these new and extra tolls, Barry O’Farrell and Tony Abbott still refuse to guarantee that WestConnex will actually connect people to the city and freight to the port,” she said.

Mr Husic said it was a Federal Labor Government that would keep tolls off the M4.

“Federal Labor has $1.8 billion on the table to help build the link on the condition that Western Sydney families do not have to pay to use the existing M4,” Mr Husic said.

“Labor also believes the road should go all the way into the city. Tony Abbott and Barry O’Farrell are happy to leave motorists stuck in traffic at Camperdown and charge them tolls for the privilege.

“The O’Farrell Government has rejected the Federal Government’s assistance because it’s determined to whack the tolls back on the M4.

“This is further proof that if Liberals aren’t cutting local services then they’re increasing costs on Western Sydney residents,” added Mr Husic.
