Program offers hope to young people in Western Sydney

Minister for Indigenous Employment and Economic Development, Julie Collins, and Member for Chifley, Ed Husic, today met trainees and graduates of an Australian Government funded program providing young Indigenous people in Sydney’s west opportunities to gain qualifications and employment.

Ms Collins and Mr Husic, visited Marist Youth Care’s (MYC) Aboriginal Trainee Support Worker Program at Whalan to hear the latest on the initiative.

“It was great to meet these young people and see first-hand the excellent work being done to help them gain employment and build a solid base for the future,” Ms Collins said.

“Marist Youth Care has more than a century of experience in helping at risk young people and their families.

“They have designed their programs and services to give young people the support and skills they need to stake a productive place in the community.”

A not-for-profit agency, MYC has received $520,000 in funding from the Australian Government to run the Aboriginal Trainee Support Worker Program over the past four years.

Mr Husic said the 12-month program helps trainees complete a Certificate IV in Community Services and supports them in obtaining drivers licences.

“After graduating, trainees are offered employment with Marist Youth Care as youth workers or support workers,” Mr Husic said.

“As a big supporter of their great work, I was more than happy to call for MYC to get funding of more than $140,000 to establish a skills development and training centre - to help deliver training and guaranteed jobs in the construction industry for disadvantaged young people.

“In partnership with organisations such as MYC, we can reach out to young people to show them that regardless of their circumstances, they can access training and employment opportunities and be given the chance to pursue a career,” Mr Husic said.
