The Federal Labor Government's announcement that it will be restoring a Medicare presence in Mt Druitt was jointly welcomed by Federal Member for Chifley, Roger Price and Labor Candidate for Chifley, Ed Husic.

As part of the Labor's service delivery reform plan, more offices will have Centrelink and Medicare services under one roof, including Mt Druitt.

"Mt Druitt residents will benefit from the new Medicare service, which will give them better access to a range of Government health, social and welfare services from the one convenient location," Mr Price said.

"We shouldn't forget that the former Howard Government closed the Mt Druitt Medicare office in 1998.

"We campaigned long and hard to get that presence back, we secured massive support in our community petition to save the Medicare office but the former Government ignored residents' pleas."

Federal Labor Candidate for Chifley Ed Husic added, "And it looks like the Liberals have learned nothing. They took Medicare away from Mt Druitt and this week they're still talking about cuts to programs and services. Having them back in Government will amount to more of the same - less service, more inconvenience."

" think it was bitterly unfair to force Mt Druitt residents to hike over to Blacktown or Penrith to get access to something as important as Medicare.

"Labor has today 'righted a wrong' and it will move quickly to make this a reality, with Medicare expected to be back in Mt Druitt from July. That's terrific.

"Putting this range of services under the one roof will make it easier for residents and simplify their dealings with Government - so I think Labor has done a great thing here."

The site currently offers standard Centrelink services plus provides access to an Authorised Review Officer, a Complex Assessment Officer, a Financial Information Services Officer and Social Workers and will now be augmented with Medicare services.

Co-location of services in this office will mean the addition of two full time Medicare staff members. It should be operational some time in July this year.

The Mt Druitt Centrelink Customer Service Centre services over 200,000 people in Mt Druitt and surrounds.

"This is another example of the Federal Labor Government delivering for the people of Chifley," Mr Price said.
