Seniors App: Your pension in the palm of your hand

Senior citizens from Sydney’s west are now able to lodge Centrelink documents quickly and securely using their smart phone or tablet.

Minister for Human Services, Senator Jan McLucas joined the Member for Chifley, Ed Husic today to demonstrate the new app feature to members of the Mount Druitt Senior Citizens and Welfare Association.

“While it might surprise some people in the community, our Express Plus Seniors App has already been downloaded over 13,000 times,” Senator McLucas said.

“The Seniors App, which was launched late last year, is designed specifically for people who receive Age Pension, and includes the new Document Lodgement Service so people can photograph the document they’re submitting and upload it through their phone or tablet.

“It’s been so well received because it saves a visit to the office or posting hard copy documents. It’s a particularly good solution for retired people who travel for extended periods of time, as well as those who report earnings regularly.”

Member for Chifley, Ed Husic was impressed with the range of transactions that could be done using the app, giving staff in the local Mt Druitt Service Centre more time to help those with more complex needs.

“Now seniors, who make up around ten per cent of Mt Druitt population, can view and update their details, claim an advance payment, subscribe to online letters, and store letters and documents in their secure ‘vault’,” Mr Husic said.

“It’s easy to download, and pensioners just use a four digit pin after their initial authentication. I’m really not surprised people are quickly adopting this option.

Senator McLucas said the Express Plus Seniors App is just one of a series of innovations from the Department of Human Services that are making things easier for Australians.

“We are quickly approaching half a million downloads of the Express Plus mobile apps, which also include Express Plus Families, Express Plus Students, and Express Plus Job Seekers,” Senator McLucas said.
