Youth funding boost to encourage culture and creativity

Federal Member for Chifley Ed Husic today encouraged local organisations to apply for government grants to support the artistic and creative development of young people.

“The Government, in understanding the importance of arts and culture to young people, has placed the emphasis of this year’s grants on arts and creative enterprises.”

“As Chifley is the second most ‘youthful’ electorate in Australia, we have lots of kids who are gifted with creative and artistic skills. We need to support and nurture that enormous pool of ability and energy” Mr Husic said.

Grants totalling $500,000 are now available under the Youth Development and Support Program, as announced by Minister for Youth Peter Garrett at the launch of National Youth Week. Mr Garrett was also in Chifley recently to present the Young Leader Award, as part of local Youth Week celebrations.

Mr Husic said organisations can apply for up to $70,000 to help engage young people in activities that develop skills and connections within their communities.

“During my visits to local school presentations, and even through the Burbs Festival held during Youth Week, I’ve been overwhelmed by the multitude of musical and  creative talent we have here.”

“Access to these grants will enable many of them to explore their potential as well as showcase their talents on a larger scale.”

“These grants will also enable organisations to support grassroots activities to help young people become better engaged with each other, and their communities,” Mr Husic said.

The program is designed to provide financial support to non-government, not-for-profit organisations for youth-led projects that inspire and encourage young people aged between 12 and 25 years to develop skills and connections within their communities.

Applications for the Youth Development and Support Program 2011-12 are now open, and will close on 27 May 2011. Organisations working with Indigenous young people are encouraged to apply. Information on the Youth Development and Support Program government grants is available at www.youth.gov.au
