Pensioners living in public housing in Chifley have every reason to be mad today with news that NSW Premier Barry O’Farrell intends to rip away much needed Federal Government assistance.
Chifley MP Ed Husic says the Federal assistance provided to pensioners in recent weeks is designed to help them meet cost of living increases.
“This is the ultimate low act by a government of hypocrites,” Mr Husic said.
“The State Liberal Government – for their own political ends – whine about cost of living increases but have no problem slugging low income earners by jacking up their housing rents.”
All pensioners have received a lump sum payment from the Federal Government over the past few weeks of $250 for singles and $380 for couples.
From March next year pensioners will also get a permanent boost to their regular payments of $338 a year for single pensioners and $510 a year for couples combined.
“The Federal Government is providing assistance to low and middle income earners with one hand but that assistance is being pinched by the hand of the State Government.
“Bart Bassett and Kevin Conolly should explain to the 5,000 pensioners in Chifley why they support this blatant rip-off by the O’Farrell Government.
“I wrote to both these State MPs months ago calling on them to do what they could to stop the O’Farrell Government from ripping off public housing tenants – I’ve heard nothing from them.
“Instead, these State MP’s played politics while doing absolutely nothing to protect low income earners from this rent rip off.”
