Parents in Chifley with children starting primary or high school next year are being encouraged to update their kids’ enrolment details with Centrelink in order to get the Schoolkids Bonus in January.
Chifley MP Ed Husic said more than 15,000 local families are likely to benefit from the new cash bonus being delivered by the Gillard Government.
“I want to ensure that every eligible family in Chifley gets access to this payment to help them keep up with the costs of uniforms, text books and excursions for their kids at school,” Mr Husic said.
“The Schoolkids Bonus will replace the old Education Tax Refund and make it easier for families to claim, rather than having to spend the money upfront and claim it back through the tax system.”
Eligible local families will receive a total of $410 a year for each child in primary school, and $820 a year for each child in high school.
The Schoolkids Bonus – paid in two instalments in January and July each year – helps parents buy uniforms, shoes, school books and stationery, as well as other costs like school excursions, music lessons and sports registration fees.
“Over the next week, parents should be contacted by Centrelink reminding them to update their information,” Mr Husic said.
“All they need to do instead is check and update their children’s study details online, then receive their bonus in time for the school year.”
Families receiving Family Tax Benefit Part A, as well as young people in school receiving Youth Allowance, and others receiving certain income support or veterans’ payments are eligible for the Schoolkids Bonus.
